SCIENCE BROS

we are going to do science

SCIENCE! This is actually something that my brain hiccuped on. There is an awful lot of SCIENCE! (and okay, it’s not always *good* science, but it’s SCIENCE!) in Avengers, X-Men, and Spider-Man. How many people read comics as kids and said, “I want to learn that, because it’s cool.” We’re in the midst of a scientific innovation desert right now, in terms of actual discovery and the encouragement of imagination. NASA is for all intents and purposes, in a coma and the drive to pursue discovery is dwindling in the public.
Or is it?
We have cell phones because of Star Trek. Someone has built a working Sonic Screwdriver. The imagination, the sense of, “What if. .  .” is still there. What isn’t there, is the funding for education and exploration. All the innovations are being done privately, and science in the public interest is necessary.
I feel like it’s possible to see comics and scifi bring the sexy back to science in the public imagination. I think they’re keeping the siren song of science alive, and I want to see what the next generation will do with that melody. I just really want there to be the will and funding to help them do it for the good of the world, not to get somebody rich.

Amen.
